Quote what he told me over email this summer. He makes excellent points, but I also don't have the access to race fuel like those in California do. So if my engine blows up, I'll just build it bigger and badder :-) What I am informing you of is what I have actually seen and not just what I think. Every car that has had water injection that I have seen in my shop has gone through at least one boost controller stepper motor and one car went through 3 of them before he finally removed the WI system. All of these cars also have extremely rusted stock intercooler pipes that go through the core support (Not Hard Pipes) These pipes stock are mild steel and painted black....The rust is so bad that flakes of rust are coming off the pipes and getting blown/sucked into the engine. One car actually had the pipes rust all the way through and had small holes in the pipes. The water does not go away.....The pipes are a fairly sealed system and the moisture stays in there like a sauna. It has the same effect as extremely wet weather or living at the beach. The moisture is always there and it eats things up. Water injection cools the air charge and allows you to make more boost without detonating on lower octane fuel. The water takes up some of the air molecules and robs some power, but your able to run more boost to have a significant power gain. High octane allows you to turn up the boost and make more power with robbing any air molecules. From doing dyno tests on many cars you always make more power at the same boost level with higher octane than you do with water injection. For me, when I want to make more power I use higher octane because it is safer, it does not bring anything else into the mix that can fail and cause more damage, and it makes the most power. Yes, water injection systems have advanced and they are much safer than they use to be.... Yes, you can make power cheaper on lower octane.... No, it is not safe enough for me to want to use it... No, it does not save money when other damage is happening... No, it does not make more power than higher octane fuel offers. Higher octane allows you to run more boost for more power and you can turn the timing higher for even more power. Running a high octane program can offer more power than running a low octane chip, but even with a low octane chip you make more power by being able to turn the boost higher. The things that can wrong with anything else in the car are things you as the driver can still keep from causing huge damage. If you do not get enough fuel you can get off the throttle. Anything that might fail that would cause detonation will general give you a warning and some detonation will not generally cause any damage. You as the driver can have the chance to get off the gas and if things do not feel right you can check it out. When a water injection system gets falsely turned on or stays on and will not shut off (this is more common than you might want to believe) you can not do anything about it and the damage is instant and massive. You simply can not compress water and it bends and breaks engine parts. Your welcome to do what ever you like.....I am just telling you what I have seen many times and why the risk/reward does not add up for me personally.
